T.C.: Happy Silver Arc Saturday, Readers! For this month’s author interview I am joined by our very own beloved A.G. Silver! So A.G., you have had an important year of writing, especially since you published Elven Cursed and When I Sign the Rock; how have you grown as a writer this year?
A.G.: So far this year, I have learned how to create more detailed sentences that really capture the reader's attention in a story and give them a good picture of what the character in a story is doing. The actions and words tie more easily together, so the story flows better and is easier to process. I used to struggle with my sentences being too choppy and direct, more like throwing the story into the Reader’s face instead of it being like a silk sheet fluttering down and settling gently over them in a natural, uniform movement. (That’s way more poetic than it should be haha).
T.C.: Ooh, that’s a good one! (You’ve also started correcting it in my writing as well XD) People can find inspiration practically anywhere, where do you find inspiration?
A.G.: I know a lot of people say they find inspiration in the people around them, or other books and whatnot, but for me, my biggest inspiration is music. If I find the perfect song that captures all the emotions of a scene I’m trying to write, I put it on loop and play it until the scene is done. I kind of absorb the emotions from the song, and then spill it all into the words, combining the story and the song so that they reflect each other. Even if the song is just simple piano, or a harp and has no words, I can feel so much emotion inside of it. So I like to listen to music while I work because that inspires me the most.
T.C.: Awesome! I think people may be surprised how much instrumental music alone can inspire. Now that Elven Cursed is published, do you have any projects planned/in progress?
A.G.: I am currently working on a dark fantasy novel that I will not reveal the title for yet ahaha. I have a little over 10,000 words for it though I’m not going to lie… I haven’t touched it in 2 weeks. I’ve had a lot of school work (cheers forlornly in High School), choir practice, clubs, leadership opportunities, and all sorts of things going on. So yes, I am still working on it, just not as actively as I could have when I was an underclassman in high school.
T.C.: I think all juniors or seniors in high school felt that one haha. Elven Cursed was your first finished and published novel- do you miss working on the story?
A.G.: Um… no. Not really ahaha. So many authors talk about how they miss their characters, which I can understand because I do kinda miss Paxikaar and Faelynn. What I do NOT miss is my horrible 13-year-old writing. *Shudders* Y’all, a writer looking over their old writing is the most torturous thing ever, so I really do not miss writing Elven Cursed because my writing skills at that age are nothing to how much I have improved. (Watch as a few years from now I say the same thing about my next books lol)
While I won’t totally discredit myself, because I had fairly good writing skills for a young teen (which if you didn’t know, I did not write Elven Cursed at 15, contrary to popular belief. I actually wrote it at 13, saved up to publish it while I was 14, and finally was able to publish it at 15.) and I was able to ‘plan’ (We all know I write on the fly) a whole story and have it make sense… for the most part. XD
T.C.: You know the sound of nails on a chalkboard? Well, writers reading their old reading have a similar feeling haha. After exploring the published world and all that it entails, what aspect of the writing world would you like to learn about? (formatting, editing, cover art, etc.)
A.G.: I would absolutely love to learn to make cover art. Like, imagine having an idea and being to just make the living visual for it. A cover artist can only guess so much about what you want, and can’t capture every aspect on their own, but if you made exactly what you wanted in a cover, would that not be amazing?
T.C.: Ooh, yes that would be amazing. Time for a classic question we ask our guest authors, who are some of your favorite authors?
A.G.: Oh I absolutely adore S. Jae-Jones. Her book Wintersong has the most amazing style of writing that I aspire to achieve. It’s so whimsical and mysterious and just flows in the prettiest way, I love it so much. I also really enjoy reading W.R.Gingell’s books. They are more modern and refreshingly fun.
T.C.: A nice variety still within fantasy settings! Not only have you written Elven Cursed, but also a short story called When I Sign the Rock. That’s quite the plethora of characters, what was the most challenging character to write?
A.G.: I’m going to sound like a complete idiot, but it was Faelynn’s maid from Elven Cursed. I don’t know why but I absolutely despised Dymphna, which made her a struggle to write. Ohhhh also Lady Freysa. She’s a butt. So rude and annoying. I mean she was supposed to be, so I’m glad she turned out like that but that didn’t make her any less annoying to write. Congrats to me for writing such good annoying characters that I even despise them hahaha.
T.C.: Hahahaha, what did Dymphna ever do to you??? Now, on the other side of the spectrum, what was your favorite character to write?
A.G.: Now y’all are gonna see how much of a hopeless romantic I am… My favorite character to write was either Pax from Elven Cursed or John from When I Sign the Rock. I just really enjoy writing about someone who is crazy in love and cares so much for their significant other. Like is it not the cutest most beautiful thing???
But yeah they were my favorite characters to write. Super cute, very friendly, and just so lovable. I want to hug them. Sidenote; I think it’s hilarious and super sweet to see people message me about my lead boys and talk about how they fell in love with them.
T.C.: Pax and John were both adorable, I don’t blame you. XD Thank you so much for your time A.G. and we can’t wait to read more of your works!
A.G.: Thank you so much for having me! ;p See you on the author side!
