Heyo Readers! A.G. silver here.
So this week I’m going to give you some tips on staying productive with your writing. I mean, be honest, how many times have you kind of sat down at your computer, and then just scrolled through Pinterest, looking at cool drawings or cute animals? Too many times, I’ll bet.
Lucky for you, your's truly has a bit of help for you. Let's get crackin!
Have a Designated Writing Time
So I know if you aren’t a full-time writer, you don’t always have the flexibility in your schedule to have that one specific time to write, but always try to aim for around the same time. When you get into a habit of writing at the same time of day, without distractions, then you’ll boost your word count by a heck of a bunch.
This part can be pretty hard, especially if you live in a loud house filled with other people. But never fear! If you have loud relatives, just plop on your headphones or earbuds and put on some writing music. For me, writing music is playing one specific song on repeat that fits the mood of what I’m writing. Now, I like to listen to pop music, but I know a lot of people get distracted by the words in the songs and complain that they start writing to the beat of the music. And that’s perfectly fine. If that is your case, I would recommend listening to some songs by Brooklyn Duo or other artists like them. They play modern songs on the cello and the piano, which I find incredibly relaxing. Besides, listening to orchestra music can jolt you out of your writing thoughts with a sudden quiet and then loud crescendo. Always a fun sound.
You have no idea how helpful it can be to set a goal for yourself. It encourages you to push forward and get those current scenes or chapters done. A good minimum of a daily word goal is about 1,000 - 2,000 words. If you can do more, that is awesome. The more used you get to writing larger amounts of words, the easier it gets to constantly write. The more dedicated you are to your word goal, the easier it will be for you to whip out those words. That being said, don’t push yourself too far so that what you write is utter gibberish. If you have absolutely no creative writing juice, take a break. Get some water. Eat a snack. Go for a walk. Do something other than being at the computer.
So those are my three big tips for productivity. I they help, and if you have any other tips or tricks that help you, shoot me an email so I can share it with everyone else!
Also, a great place to submit your work after you're done being a productive star is Scribophile. The supportive group of writers adn editors are amazing and they have been such a huge help for my won writing.
