Wowsers, so I never realized the fine line between magic and science in writing.
Yes, I have read those quotes and all that where people say, “Magic is just science too complex for you to understand.” Which means, depending on your knowledge of science, anything could be magic. Without knowing chemical reactions and the like, mixing mentos and soda to cause an explosion could be seen as magic (at least in medieval times. ;p ).
In all reality, once you get down to the bare bones, the only difference is a) which one you use, based on if magic or science works better for your story, or b) based on how much research you feel like doing. Because what could be perceived as magical mind control from one book, is actually just bio-electricity manipulation in another book, but you’d have to do a heck of a bunch of research to learn about bio-electricity instead of making up the rules for magic.
And then the choice of science or magic gets harder once you get to the complicated things, like bringing someone back to life. If you want to have the person brought back to life in a magical book, there is always some sort of price. Either the person is a shade of what they once were, or they drain the life of the person who raised them to sustain themselves- All that fun stuff. But if you were doing it scientifically, the person would ‘be alive’ but they would just be constantly relying on machines.
At a certain point though, writing about magic makes me feel lazy. I mean, there are all those people who spend like 5 billion years researching for their sci-fi books while I’m like… eh no. I say the character snaps their fingers and the flames respond. To be fair, I’m not much of a sci-fi person. There are a few sci-fi things I have read and enjoyed, but over-all, deep science is not my forte.
That being said, I am actually trying my hand at a sci-fi book to see what its like, and so far it’s actually going pretty well and I’m happy. I have about 16,000 words written (and I’ve only been working on this for about a week!), but with school starting up soon, who knows how much work I’ll be able to get done then.
That’s about all I have for this week, so keep up the writing and I’ll see you on the author side!Ciao!
