Happy Saturday Readers, T.C. Arc here! Authors always seem to be closely connected to their characters, but for some reason, it's something I struggle with. It's also common for authors to make a playlist of songs that remind them of their characters and/or story. I tried making one of these playlists for the first time this week and I must say it's very helpful and a lot of fun.
The first playlist I made is for A Heart Adrift, my main project now that Hey There Delilah is finished. Since I find inspiration for my stories from music originally it makes sense that having a playlist would help connect me to the story but I didn’t realize that until this week lol. So, to find music that fit my story I started with the song that inspired the story and then other songs that I already knew fit the story. After looking over those songs, I thought more about what genres/emotions would help round out my story.
Since A Heart Adrift is still in progress and I don’t want to give too much away, I’ll use the playlist I made for Hey There Delilah as an example. The first song on the playlist is Hey There Delilah for obvious reasons and then I just added a bunch of cute and sweet love songs. So, those songs create the general ambiance of the story but after thinking more about my characters there were other songs I also wanted to add. Thomas and Delilah have known each other for years so I found a song that portrayed a long-lasting friendship. I also know that even though Delilah and Thomas face a lot of changes, their relationship kept them strong so I found a song for that. Then, since Thomas is into music I thought of other songs he might have written and added those as well.
I already finished writing Hey There Delilah so I don’t know how much it would have helped me to listen to the playlist as I write. However, having inspiration for that certain story in a certain place makes it really easy to go back to whenever I need some more ideas. I found it fascinating how songs that weren’t written for your story at all fit so well. If you are struggling to connect to your characters or usually find inspiration in music, then I encourage you to try making a story playlist!
