Hello lovely Readers! A.G. Silver here!
In every story you read, it’s always enjoyable to see a protagonist who is different from other authors’ protagonists. If everyone was the same, then the stories would become boring. That’s why today, I’m going to help you learn how to make memorable, unique characters.
So to start off, we need the basics: race (elf, human, goblin, etc.), gender, a few simple descriptions (eye color, hair color, and skin color), 2 personality traits, and the character’s name. Once you have these basic traits, the rest of the character is easier to build. Also, if you are like me and can’t write well if you have to plan everything out (I write much better if I just come up with everything as I go), then having these few things gives you enough info to know what you are doing, but not too much information that you get writer's block.
Now for those of you who DO work well with a lot of preplanned information, here’s some more things you can write out to help with your character:
Write a backstory
Create a detailed list of personality traits and habits that your character has
Get more detailed on how your character looks (Do they have some sort of scar on their body? Do they have freckles? Do they have some sort of permanent injury? What does their nose look like- pointed or round?)
Is there something special about your character (Do they have hidden powers? Can they talk to animals? Are they immune to all poisons?
What’s their favorite color? Do they wear that color really often?
What are they scared of?
What is their worst fear?
What kinds of food do they like? Are they easily bribed with that food?
What are some skills that your character has?
Are they able to wield a weapon?
Now that you have all of this information, tweak some things to make your character different from all the book characters you’ve read- hone in on what makes them special and emphasize it. We like to read about unique individuals, not the same basic person in 50 different worlds.
Maybe your character has different colored eyes? Or maybe everyone in their kingdom has the same kind of magic, but for some reason their magic is different- and not in a good way.
There are endless possibilities of how you can make your character different.
As for this week's writing update, I got the second draft of my book cover back and it looks GLORIOUS. I’m soooo excited for the final cover to come out. It will be freakin amazing.
I hope you Readers are having a good week, so stay safe and I’ll see you on the author side!
