Welcome back, Readers! T.C. Arc here again. Last week I explained what exactly authenticity is and how to live it in daily life and this week I am going to explain how it affects our writing.
So, how can we apply authenticity in writing? Writing is so personal to each author it’s almost impossible not to use authenticity but, sometimes it can be confusing. For example, I like to write fiction romance stories but in that genre, there are probably millions of books. What if I have some of the same ideas as other people? How is my story authentic if so many other people write similarly?
As a writer, whenever I see similarities in my writing to other people’s writing I can freak out. However, as a reader, I gladly read and enjoy ten books of the same genre with some similar characters or plot devices. In fact, there is even a well-known template for writing called the Hero’s Journey that many famous books/movies fit into. Even though your writing has similarities to other books, that’s all they are, similarities. Give yourself a pat on the back because if someone else had a similar idea, yours must be great, right? XD
Your authenticity comes through in character interactions, the theme of your story, and the worlds they take place in. Even though structurally writing is often similar, the content still varies widely. YOU wrote the story so, even unconsciously, your story will be authentic.
If you still don’t know how to apply authenticity in writing or just want to review how your writing is going, here are some questions to reflect on:
Review your favorite books or books of the same genre you are writing. What do you think is lacking in those books/what could be improved?
What difficulties have you faced in your life? Are there aspects of those difficulties that you want to include in your writing?
Is there a specific moral or theme you want to portray?
What special talents does your writing bring to the table? (maybe you really like mythical creatures so your story includes unique animals you created or maybe you apply your special sort of humor)
I think that wraps up my thoughts on authenticity, at least for now haha. I know each and every one of you is writing amazing things so keep at it! Have a lovely week, Readers, and I’ll see you next time!
