Hello hello lovely Readers! A.G. Silver here and I am so glad to be back. As T.C. Arc had stated last week, I had a responsibility that took priority before the blog (you know it’s important if it comes between me and my writing ;p). But thankfully I am back and ready to bring some knowledge to you guys!
So lately I get a looot of messages asking about how to start and run a blog, and I’m always glad to help, albeit I get very busy so I’m not always able to help everyone as much as I would like to. To help with that, I thought I’d make a post covering the basics of blogging!
Without further ado, welcome to the first behind the scenes of Silver Arc! In this episode of behind the scenes, I’ll focus on more essential aspects of the blog, but next week I will go into more depth on side projects and little add ons for your blog.
To start off, I’m going to give some background information. First, you’re going to need a website. There are many platforms out there to build your site, such as Wix, Squarespace, Google Sites, etc., but I will be focusing on Google Sites since that is what Silver Arc runs on.
When first making a website, I recommend making two- one that will be your actual site, and then a second side ‘site’ where you can experiment with how things work, that way you don’t mess up your actual site. Figure out what buttons do what, how to format something nicely, how to add images, etc. Once you have a pretty good idea of how everything works, move to your actual website and apply what you learned. Don’t worry if later down the line you learn even more and end up changing a lot of your site. I’ve done that before on Silver Arc after realizing a certain way of formatting works better.
Now that you have a functioning website, which if you’re on Google Sites, should have a name like ‘sites.google.com/insertsitename’, you can search for a website domain provider. You can buy a domain name so that your website will be ‘insertsitename.com’ instead of the ‘sites.google.com’ one. There are different providers and different payment plans. You can do it by month or by year. I would recommend choosing a plan depending on how dedicated you feel to your blog- kinda nervous and unsure? Maybe go month by month in case you don’t want to pay for a whole year.
Moving on! Now that we have our site formatted and our own domain, we are practically set to be up and running!
The last thing that I am going to cover for today is putting out posts. In order to do so, you first need a document (Word or Google docs). On the first page, write out ideas that come to your mind. It will be super helpful for keeping track of anything you may be able to use in the future. After that, just write down each post in the document and copy and paste into your blog- your writing is much safer this way in case there is some sort of glitch.
I hope these are helpful to you Readers, and be on the lookout for next week's post which covers the more decorative features of a blog. Onto the word of the week!
Word of the Week: Epeolatry
Pronunciation: Eh-pee-ah-lah-tree
Definition: The worship of words
History and Etymology: Derived from the Greek word ‘Epos’ meaning ‘word’ and ‘-latry’ meaning ‘worship’.
Example: I read until drowsiness overcomes my epeolatry and I can no longer keep my eyes open.
That’s all for this week! Have a great weekend and see you on the author side!
