Heyo Readers! A.G. Silver again!
So remember how last week I said I couldn’t decide which book to work on next? Well I finally decided! I have decided to work on my 3,500 word idea (which is now at 5,000 words!) It is a dark fantasy novel that I’m hoping to get at least 70,000 words for- who knows it may become even longer. I’m currently tracking my progress for it on the Nanowrimo website, and it’s helping me keep up with my daily word count.
Speaking of daily word count, I feel like I should send out some encouragement to our Readers who are also working on writing projects right now- especially their first official projects. I know how hard it can be to stick to a daily word count, and the struggle of writer's block.
So to those of you who are working on a writing project, don’t give up! Don’t be saddened if your word count isn’t as high as other peoples. Not everyone can write 2,000 words a day- even doing just 150 a day is great. All you need to do is keep the creative juices flowing and practice your writing skills daily. Don’t compare yourself to other writers- everyone is different and has unique writing styles. If one of your writing buddies has 30 pages of notes and planning for their novel and you have zero notes but 6,000 words of writing, don’t worry! Not everyone is a planner- I for one am most definitely not. The only thing I plan are the scenes that first came to mind for the story, adn character names. Meanwhile I have friends that have the entire family lineage of their characters planned out with backstories and all, as well as entire religions, languages, maps, and everything you could possibly think of. We both have our own styles of writing that work best for our personalities, and we both are able to write really well. So don’t worry if you are in a situation like my friends and I- it’ll all work out for each writer.
Here are a few ways to keep up your word count:
Set a daily goal. By doing so you set a standard for yourself to follow, and it encourages you to keep working. By having a daily word count, you can guestimate around when your first draft will be finished.
Always have a notebook and pen with you. Always. That way, when sudden inspiration hits, you can easily write down your ideas, whether it be a plot idea, or a randomly very detailed scene. This way, even if you aren’t typing on your laptop, you are still keeping the creative juices flowing and adding to your word count.
I hope this helps! And remember to be easy on yourself- don’t set way too high of a standard for a word count, and don’t fret if you don’t reach it for a few days. The important thing is that you keep pushing forward. That’s all for this week! See you on the author side!
