Happy Saturday, Readers! T.C. Arc here with a spoiler special and behind the scenes of sorts. As many of you know, I published my first short story, Hey There Delilah, a little over a week ago! I can now say with full confidence that I am a published author and I am so grateful to have hit this landmark in my life.
Looking back at my Google docs history, I started writing Hey There Delilah on November 13, 2019, and ended it on September 28, 2021. So, I took about three years to very slowly write and polish it. My new current project, A Heart Adrift, is already longer than all of Hey There Delilah and I haven’t been working on it as long. It's really encouraging to see that my writing speed and content have improved and I can’t wait to finish A Heart Adrift!
Back to Hey There Delilah though, it's a really sweet story and Thomas and Delilah’s friendship was so heartwarming to write. Thomas and Delilah both fall into the character trope of Boy or Girl Next Door. They are sweet, friendly, caring, and just trying to navigate their world together. Thomas and Delilah were at a time in their life when everything seemed confusing and new but they were confident in their friendship which led them to realize just how much they loved each other.
Since I’m at a time in my life where college decisions and new experiences aren’t that far off, Hey There Delilah is sort of a comfort story. It gives me hope that everything is going to be okay and that friendships can persevere even over great distances. Sure, maybe my life won’t be as smooth as Thomas and Delilah’s, but their story isn’t too unrealistic either.
The only real easter egg I have in Hey There Delilah is Delilah’s pet cat. Towards the middle of the story, Delilah mentions to Thomas that she wants to get a pet to help with the loneliness. Thomas recommends that she get a cat because dogs become their owner's best friend and Thomas can’t have a dog taking his place as Delilah’s best friend. In one of the very last scenes, Delilah is holding her pet cat who she named Gilbert. His name was the hardest to come up with out of all the characters for some reason! I tried classic pet names or names that somehow related to music but nothing seemed to work. So, I ended up naming the cat Gilbert after my family’s old cat. Gilbert’s memory lives on through this story! XD
Another random quirk is that I always pictured Delilah wearing hair accessories. In the scene where she helps Thomas pack up his room, I always imagined her wearing a kerchief or hair scarf around her hair. And then when she visits him at college and she and Thomas go for a walk, I always pictured her in a beret.
Now for the word of the week!
The Word of the Week is: Logophile
Pronunciation (Romanized): log-ah-file
Definition: a lover of words
History and Etymology: It is composed of two Greek roots: logo-, meaning “word” or “speech,” and -philos, which gave us the form -phile, meaning “lover of” or “enthusiast for”—as seen in words like bibliophile (book lover) and cinephile (movie buff).
Example: She always used new and interesting words so it was clear to see she was a logophile.
I hope you all enjoy Hey There Delilah and the rest of your weekend! See you next time!
